The police woke us at two thirty,
told us they suspected an incendiary device
at the bottom of our road,
best to evacuate our house now,
just in case. I stood in wonder
as we suspected every unfamiliar car.

ii.
In the middle of the high street,
holding my nephew as the town
congregated in unison
to protest and pay respect.
We would not succumb to a common grief.
I stood and took the lesson.
